“Table Leg” | Short Non-Fiction

It was bright sunny day. I was heading to my regular coaching classes. I must have been in 9th standard. 15 mints walk was how I used to commute. I was on time that day. Teacher came in; maroon was his favorite color to put on, but that day he had worn black.

15:50 IST, I was at the door step. Waiting for someone wasn’t an issue those days. Teaching started sharp at 16:00 IST, as usual. Two of our batchmates were late by 5 minutes, that day. Room was already full, yet they were also to adjust. One adjusted other side of bench. One sat next to me as I moved inwards. It was three-seater bench, but four were made to adjust on daily basis. Even I don’t know why. Don’t know about others, but I was not at all comfortable on that bench. I was damn shy those days.

That whole hour went adjusting my legs and position. But nothing worked. More importantly it made me feel very shy and uncomfortable that my leg was touching the girl’s, who adjusted next to me. I was constantly applying force inwards in intent to keep my leg away from her, which did nothing but made my leg pain badly.

My whole attention went in adjusting myself.

“Aman where is your focus?”, Simran (the tutor) asked me.

Started to adjust my posture, with a thought he might notice and arrange a new bench. But nothing as such happened.

“I’m here only. Just got distracted a bit.. but I am listening now”, I replied to him.

Teaching continued.

Every minute of the clock felt like an hour in itself.

Not 5 minutes passed, tutor again pointed me by asking a question related to the subject he was teaching.

You think I had any idea what was being taught to us?

Not a bit.

I firmly apologized and requested to give me one last chance. Luckily, he spared me again.

Now 15 minutes left when I was only praying and praying.

Suddenly a thought came in that ‘how come she is comfortable and didn’t point once?’. I was already going furious to see a girl being comfortable in that situation comparing me. But, how come? Until session ended, I could not get answer to it.

5 minutes left in the session.

Now I was counting seconds.

3 minutes left exactly, when Simran sort of finished the teaching and was giving some home-work for next day.

Who cares! I was looking forward to stand up and leave the class as early as possible.

He was still in the classroom, I suddenly looked at the area where my leg was touching her body.

I almost had an attack when I realized that my leg was touching table’s leg, not hers.

“OMG!!!!

“How fool I am!”

This made me look so dumb in my own eyes. That I didn’t even tell anyone ever. Now when I am writing about it, you know it.

Today when I recall that incident, I laugh like anything.

‘Just thought I’d share this laugh with my fellow readers’ ;)
